Kaisayr welcomed the team who pushed them all the way for the title last season in PSJ for a first meeting of the season. This match promised to be a belter as these two teams always serve up good matches. With a few boys missing, stand in-gaffer Alan Jess had to shuffle the pack and the biggest change involved the goalkeepers position. With last years player of the year Kyle McKay missing through work, winger Greame Warnock dusted down his gloves and went between the sticks. Jimjay took Warney's place on the left wing and Steve Noble returned up front with Andrew Gamble working.
PSJ started the game far stronger and had a great ten minute spell where the champions couldn't get out of their own half. If it hadn't been for some solid defending and confident goalkeeping, Ayr could have found themselves trailing. However, it was Kaisayr who took the lead against the run of play. After soaking up PSJ's pressure, Ayr had been making the odd break up the park and it was one of these that lead to the opener. A throw-in from the right found Pete in the box and he knocked it back to Andy to cross. Jimjay met the ball and when his shot was blocked, Martin Tocker reacted quickest to send a stunning volley home from twelve yards.
The home side was quickly doubled their lead with an own goal. Tocker broke down the right and sent a cross deep into the penalty area, Steve got a touch before the defender came across him and volleyed goalwards. The keeper made a great point-blank save but the defender showed great determination as he followed in to head home at the second attempt. This goal seemed to knock the wind out of PSJ's sails and Kaisayr started to turn the screw. It wasn't long before they got a third. The ball broke around the PSJ penalty area after a corner and after Grammy got a touch to send the ball backwards, Ian arrived to strike home his first Kaisayr goal, a beauty high past the goalkeeper. With the job half done Ayr knew they couldn't take the foot off the gas as half time was blown.
Half-time: Kaisayr 3-0 PSJ
Kaisayr started the second half brightly and were playing some lovely flowing football, with midfielder Drew Wallace at the heart of most attacks. It wasn't until midway through the second half that Kaisayr added to the score. With the attack focussing down the left flank, the ball was cut back to Ahmet whose superb ball found Tocker in the box who finished off superbly into the far corner.
Tocker had been threatening a scoring display like this since his return, but it wasn't all great in front of goal for Ayr, when a great cross was fired wide from 6 yards by the unmarked Graeme Morton.
Manager Jess made changes, but Ayr weren't finished and added a fifth when Ian won the ball on the edge of the Ayr box and picked out Fuzzy's run. The sub sprung the offside trap and dinked the ball over the advancing keeper before calmly slotting home to complete the rout.
Not many would have suggested such a comprehensive scoreline before the game, but a good day at the office for Kaisayr in their quest to retain the Scottish league trophy. The boys had made their night even better as they celebrated Ian's engagment. Later on Tocker completed his hat-trick by scoring back at Ian's with a lovely lady - man of the day, never mind just the match...
